St. Joseph Catholic Church
St. Joseph Parish was founded by Bishop John Baptist Miege in 1858. The first church, a frame building facing Osage Street, was dedicated on July 10, 1859.
On October 9, 1864, Bishop Miege transferred the parish to Carmelite fathers who had recently arrived from Germany. St. Joseph's was the first house of the Carmelite Order in the United States & Canada. A national parish for German Catholics, the German language was used in liturgies into the twentieth century.
The present brick church was dedicated on June 18, 1871.
