Tour à signaux
| — | Upper Canada Village | — |
This timber structure is based on an 1830's sketch of a signal tower that was part of the British Fort (Fort Henry) in Kingston during the War of 1812. The Signal Tower at Upper Canada Village was constructed in 1961, and rebuilt in 2001. It was originally used to represent how military messages were sent during the War of 1812, and included a visual system of balls and pennants mounted on a mast at the top of the tower (an exhibit on the main floor illustrates this system). By the 1860s the signalling systems on these land-based towers had been replaced by the electric telegraph.
