1. Family Room Marker

Inscription. The dominant feature in the family room is the fireplace on the north wall which is flanked with cut stone tablets and a mantle shelf running the full width of the room, very close to where the beams of the ceiling would have been.

On the south wall opposite is a rare fragment of early 17th century plasterwork, the remains of a frieze that would have once decorated the walls of this room. In contrast to the Banqueting Hall, the Family Room was a place for warm gatherings and homely talk around a blazing log fire.
