1. Bailey House Marker
Inscription. This handsome granite residence was built in 1886-88 by architect Samuel B. Reed, for James A. Bailey. In 1881, Bailey and Phineas T. Barnum founded the famed Barnum and Bailey Circus. This house is a fine example of the Romanesque revival style popular at the time and characterized by arcade windows, bays, and delicate ornamental detail.
 
Erected 1989 by New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation.

2. Bailey House
The marker is in the bottom left corner of the photo, affixed to the stone pillar for the porch.
Nicholas Place would be lined with other mansions and would develop into a Harlem version of lower Riverside Drive. But Bailey was disappointed by apartment construction in the area in the 1890's, Mr. Adams said, and moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y."
