Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked in an apartment within the Thomasschule while serving as cantor of St. Thomas Church and director of music for Leipzig's principal churches. Bach's residence was in the school building adjacent to the church. The Old Thomasschule was demolished in 1902, while St. Thomas Church still stands today.
