Inscription. Called the "Home Chapel" in its early years, this church was completed in 1870 and is the oldest building on campus as well as being the oldest chapel in the VA system. The Veterans of the Home built the chapel using limestone they quarried from two sites on the grounds. The bell tower contains the Centennial Bell, installed in 1876 to commemorate our country's 100th anniversary. Installation of an electric organ, the first in Montgomery County, was a major local event in 1896. Reverend William Earnshaw, was the first chaplain of the Central Branch, and was instrumental to its success in providing a home-like environment for the Veterans.
