1. Cork Great War Memorial Marker
Inscription. Lest We Forget

Erected by public subscription under the auspices of the Cork Independent Ex-Servicemens Club, in memory of their comrades who fell in the Great War fighting for the freedom of small nations

1914 – 1918

“Greater deed hath no man done”

“They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning
We will remember them.”

1939 – 1945

“When you go home,
Tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow we gave our today”

5. Cork Great War Memorial - East Face
On 17 March 1925, the unveiling of the Great War memorial took place at the South Mall, the ceremony being performed by General Standish Harrison, late commanding officer Royal Munster Fusiliers' Depot, who took the salute from the foot of the memorial. Many thousands of ex-servicemen, and widows and orphans of the men in whose honour the memorial was erected, were present at the ceremony.

2. Writing the Irish back into the First World War (Niamh Gallagher, University of Cambridge).
On the one hand this image could be interpreted as one of the many demonstrations of remembrance which occurred across the United Kingdom and European continent in the aftermath of the First World War. But among these acts this example stands out because it appears anomalous when put in the context of historical writing about the county and city. During the course of the twentieth century, Cork became known for the stand it took against the British during the 1919-21 conflict, often called the Irish War of Independence, which brought about an end to the 1801 Acts of Union
