History: The war memorial reminds the residents of Medemblik of the more than 700 Dutch soldiers who lost their lives between 1939 and 1940. They were part of the mobilization garrison (the 4th and 5th companies of the 11th Depot Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment). Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, this garrison was stationed in Medemblik, housed in locations including local schools, St. Martins Church, and a barracks camp on the Westersingel.(Submitted on June 12, 2026.)
Erection: The memorial waspresented to the municipality by a citizens' committee, following a fundraising campaign among the local population. Unveiling: The memorial was unveiled on August 24, 1940, by Mayor Peters. Following the mayor's speech, the sixth verse of the Wilhelmus (the Dutch national anthem) was sung. The line "to drive out the tyranny that wounds my heart" (den tyrannie verdrijven die mij mijn hert doorwondt) particularly provoked the anger of local National Socialists.
