In naming this facility, Marietta College recognizes a family of newspaper publishers who contributed greatly to the enhancement of life in this area. The ownership of the Marietta Times for 84 years (1890-1974) and its management for nearly a century (1890-1982) by the McKinneys -- successively, Benjamin J. McKinney, sons Frank B. and Will P. McKinney. The latter's son William B. McKinney, and his son William C. McKinney, with their respective families -- meant distinguished community service, public-spirited leadership, and immeasurable contributions to the Marietta area, the city, and this college. They set journalistic standards worthy of emulation by those who will work and study in this structure.
