More about this marker. The marker is one of four erected in front of trees as memorials to graduates of Glenbard West High School who died in Vietnam. The school is located across the street.
Regarding Robert F. Morgan. Robert Morgan grew up in Glen Ellyn played football and baseball at Glenbard West. After graduating from Miami University in Ohio in 1960, he enlisted in the Marines.
In Vietnam, Morgan was captain of Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, leading a group of 140 men. During the early morning of Sept. 4, 1967, Morgan's company was near Dong Son village when it was ambushed and surrounded by a large unit of North Vietnamese troops. As he worked to put his unit into position to hold off the attack, Morgan was mortally wounded by North Vietnamese gunfire.
Morgan was survived by his wife and two children and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn.
