On this site, between the city wall and Ritterstraße, Duke George of the House of Wettin had the New College (called the Red College from 1664 onward) built for the university by 1517. The buildings facing the city — formerly the site of the city marshal's stables — were assigned to the Faculty of Philosophy. In the rear complex were professors' residences, student lodgings, and a vaporarium (a heated room used for lectures). In 1891–1892, the late Gothic timber-framed buildings were demolished and extensively rebuilt according to designs by Arwed Rossbach. While the rear buildings were destroyed in 1943, the front building survived and recalls its late Gothic predecessor through its gabled structures, Gothic decorative elements, and especially its use of red façade brickwork.
