Tooele in Tooele County, Utah — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Tooele Valley Railway Depot
In 1909, the International Smelter & Refining Company built a smelter in Pine Canyon five miles east of Tooele City. Tooele Valley Railway connected the smelter to the Union Pacific and Western Pacific railroads west of Tooele.
This facility was the Tooele Depot and was the administrative center of the Tooele Valley Railway from 1909 to 1982. The main depot building is a brick structure surrounded on three sides by a wood dock. The simple, functional building had three rooms: two offices and a freight room. Original tracks are still in the ground. Other historical buildings on the property are a repair building and house, in which a Section Foreman and his family lived. The main engine house was at the smelter. The Warner Depot stood west of Tooele City at the junction of the Tooele Valley, Union Pacific, and Western Pacific Railways.
An Historic Site
When the railway company closed in 1982, members of the community sought to preserve the history of mining and railroads in Tooele County. They worked to have this site turned into a museum and historical park. The owners of the railway at that time, Atlantic Richfield, donated the entire depot complex to Tooele City along with some rolling stock. The Tooele Valley Museum opened in the summer of 1983. Shortly after, the depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
