English:
Opened in 1981, the New Gewandhaus (Cloth Hall) was the only concert hall to be built in the GDR and was instigated by the Gewandhaus Music Director Kurt Masur. It is the home of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra which was founded in 1743. The building provides two halls for a wide variety of uses. The motto on the organ prospect RES SEVERA VERUM GAUDIUM (True joy is a serious matter) has been associated with the Gewandhaus since 1781.
