Seit jeher spielt die Musik an der „Alma Mater Lipsiensis“ eine große Rolle. Zahlreiche studentische Ensembles bereicherten das Musikleben Leipzigs. Bedeutende Komponisten waren eng mit der Universität verbunden: Georg Philipp Telemann, Robert Schumann und Richard Wagner als Studenten, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy und Heinrich Marschner als Ehrendoktoren sowie Max Reger als Universitätsmusikdirektor.

Music has always played an important role at the "Alma Mater Lipsiensis". Numerous student ensembles have contributed significantly to Leipzig's musical life. Notable composers closely associated with the university include Georg Philipp Telemann, Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner as students, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Heinrich Marschner as honorary doctorates in music and Max Reger as University Music Director.
