Why build a Global War on Terrorism Memorial?

This Memorial honors our armed forces and their families for the sacrifices they have made to preserve and protect our freedoms. These modern-day American patriots -- all volunteers -- have been involved in the longest conflict in our history. Many have made multiple deployments while serving their country faithfully and bravely. Over 7,000 have given the ultimate sacrifice and millions more have answered the call of duty, honor, and country. Our service personnel and veterans are a key part of what makes our Nation great. This Memorial serves as a way for us to honor and thank them for their courageous efforts and also provide Gold Star families with a place of solace to reflect and remember their loved ones.

Why build the Global War on Terrorism Memorial here?

This Memorial is within the legislative boundary of the Flight 93 National Memorial and located beneath the skies where 40 brave men and women sacrificed their lives fighting back against terrorists on September 11, 2001. Our Global War on Terrorism service men and women have been inspired by them, as they followed in their footsteps, to continue the battle to protect our way of life. We also hope this Memorial will enhance the experience for the hundreds
