Canada's National Poultry Breed
Created by a monk named M. Wilfred Chatelaine (1876-1963) in the Province of Quebec in 1919. The Chantecler chicken was bred to be a 'dual-purpose' breed, meaning they provided good meat and good egg production.
Bred to be 'good-winter egg layers' these chickens have small red combs and wattles which suit the cold Canadian climate. Chanteclers were officially recognized as a breed in 1921. They were the very first poultry breed to be created in Canada.
