1. The Town Cross Marker
Inscription.  
The Town Cross is first mentioned in 1596, but probably existed earlier. In the past, this is where the Mayor was elected. The original cross disappeared between 1680 and 1710, but the medieval steps remain. The restoration was the final achievement of the Rev. Matthew Woodward, Vicar from 1851-1898, whose grave, behind the cross, is marked by a marble cruciform gravestone. The restored cross, dedicated in September 1897, was designed by Sylvester Slingsby Stalwood.

La Croix de la Ville est mentionnée pour la première fois en 1596 mais elle existait probablement déjà. C'est ici qu'était élu autrefois le Maire de la ville. La première croix disparut entre 1680 et 1710 mais les marches médiévales subsistèrent. Sa restauration fut l'oeuvre du Révérend Matthew Woodward, curé de la paroisse de 1851 à 1898. Le Révérend Woodward est enterré derrière la croix : une pierre tombale en marbre cruciforme en indique l'endroit. La croix fut conçue par Sylvester Slingsby Stalwood.
