Leipzig Opera House
The present building on this site was opened in 1960, the previous opera house having been destroyed during World War II. Leipzig's operatic heritage stretches back to 1693, making it one of the oldest civic music theatres in the world. During the more than 300 year tradition of opera in Leipzig, important composers including Georg Philipp Telemann, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Albert Lortzing and Gustav Mahler were engaged here.
