Die erste Bürgerschule Leipzigs war von 1831 bis 1887 Sitz der Leipziger Stadtverordneten und damit Ort politischer Debatten. Hier beschlossen die Abgeordneten am 1. März 1848 eine Petition an den sächsischen König. Sie forderten Reformen des Staates, mehr Bürgerrechte und die deutsche Einheit. Dieser mutige Brief wurde Vorbild für andere Städte und leitete die erste demokratische Revolution 1848/49 in Sachsen ein. In öffentlichen Versammlungen wurden Debatten um bürgerliche Rechte und Freiheiten geführt. Mitbestimmung in Vereinen und Parteien wurde bis zu erneuten Verboten zumindest Männern möglich.

Die Moritzbastei ist der einzige erhaltene Teil der Leipziger Stadtbefestigung. Auf ihr stand die Bürgerschule, bis sie im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört wurde. Von 1979 bis 1993 dienten die vom Schutt befreiten Räume der Moritzbastei als Studentenclub der Universität Leipzig.

therefore a place of political debate. Here, on March 1, 1848, the council members approved a petition to the King of Saxony. They called for reforms of the state, expanded civil rights, and German unity. This courageous letter became a model for other cities and helped initiate the first democratic revolution of 1848–49 in Saxony. In public assemblies, debates were held on civil rights and freedoms. Participation in associations and political parties became possible, at least for men, until such activities were once again prohibited.

The Moritz Bastion is the only surviving part of Leipzig’s historic city fortifications. The civic school stood on this site until it was destroyed during the Second World War. From 1979 to 1993, the rooms of the Moritz Bastion, cleared of wartime rubble, served as a student club of Leipzig University.
