Burlington Northern #10032
Caboose
This extended-vision cupola-style caboose was originally built by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1969. It was first named the NP #10401 but later became the BN #10032 when Northern Pacific merged with other railroads to become the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970. This caboose was one of the last 25 cabooses ordered by the Northern Pacific Railroad
The #10032 is an example of an extended-vision, or wide cupola-style caboose. Crew members seated in the caboose needed to be able to observe the rest of the train cars moving along the track. Railroads used different caboose designs to make this possible. The extended vision cupola design employed a tall cupula tower with side windows that extended beyond the sides of the car body. This design allowed crew members to see the train from both the side and the top.
