Fifty years after Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) established Negro History Week, the organization extends the commemoration throughout February and renames it Black History Month. This year's theme: America for All Americans.

ASALH had long distributed Black history materials to schools across the country from their headquarters at Woodson's home here in DC. These resources often challenged narratives in standard history textbooks. Some educators had to teach these lessons to their students in secret.
