On the morning of September 11, 2001, two hijacked jetliners were flown into the twin towers of New York's Trace Center, a third jetliner dove into the Pentagon, and after passengers attempted to wrest control from the terrorists on board, a fourth jetliner crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It's target was the White House. More than 3,000 people died on this day, including Peter Goodrich, the son of Bennington's Donald and Sally Goodrich.
The 9/11 Memorial exists to remind us that day and those who died. The twisted and rusted steel from the World Trade Center site memorialized here on a base of Vermont Danby marble was acquired through the efforts of Rich Ryder of Pownal, Vermont. Ryder obtained the Steel from Bill Harris, a friend from Ryder's hometown of Pearl River, New York.
Immediately after the attacks, Harris, the owner of an excavating company, rushed to Ground Zero, the site of the Twin Towers, with equipment and work crews to help clear the site in order to rescue the injured and recover the bodies of the dead. Harris accepted no money for his work. In lieu of his payment, he asked for and was given steel from the site, most of which was used to create 9/11 Memorials in Rockland County, New York. He donated the piece of steel for this memorial to the Town of Bennington at Ryder's request.
Harris passed away on September 28, 2008 from illnesses directly related to his work at Ground Zero.
The Memorial was dedicated September 11, 2011, by the people of Bennington, Vermont to remember the lives lost to honor the heroes of 9/11.
"It is my hope that when you look at that piece of steel you will think not of the hands that twisted it, but of what you can do that is worth doing, that is true and beautiful and good, even virtuous to help build a better world and counter the hatred symbolized by the attack."
Donald Goodrich
