CN LOCOMOTIVE NO. 6218

This Canadian National (CN) steam locomotive was built in September 1942 by the Montreal Locomotive Works.

Between 1942 and 1960, this engine hauled both freight and passengers. Its runs stretched across the country, travelling as far as Halifax in the east and Saskatoon in the west. It also provided service to Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire.

The main section of the CN 6218 engine is the boiler which held water. Coal stored in the tender behind the engine was shovelled into the firebox next to the boiler and the heated water in turn produced steam. The buildup of pressure from the steam forced the pistons to move back and forth, propelling the engine forward.

CN 6218 was retired from regular service in 1960, but returned in 1964, providing special excursions known as

CN retired the locomotive permanently in 1973 and presented it to the Town of Fort Erie. It was unveiled to the public in 1974 as a symbol and reminder of the town's rich railway history.
