Huis aan zee
⎯⎯⎯
House by the sea
Navy canteen 't Huys Tijdverdrijf, or the house pastime, a recreation centre for navy personnel, was built against the dike in 1954. In the canteen, named after one of Michiel de Ruyter's ships, one could play billiards or darts with a view of the Marsdiep or read the newspaper. Officially, civilians were not allowed in, but during dance evenings with live music, it often happened that the young men of Den Helder waited jealously outside the door while their sweethearts danced with the navy servicemen. In 1998, 't Huys Tijdverdrijf was razed. Now there are plans to fortify the dike and build houses there, linking the sea with the city.
