Inscription. In 1878, Mr George Mence Smith opened the Folkestone branch of his London business, dealing in oils and colour (paint), and as a grocer. In 1909 a plumber was working in the basement, and accidentally set one of the vats of oil alight. The whole building burnt to the ground, with rivers of flaming oil streaming down the High Street. Mence Smith was forced to rebuild on the same site, resulting in the building that stands here today. For many years it was the home of Strange Cargo Arts Company, and in the early days of the Creative Quarter regeneration, the independent Quarter magazine was printed in the basement with volunteer help.
