Hier stand das Gewandhaus, das Messehaus der Tuchhändler. Die Konzerte, die hier ab 1781 stattfanden, wurden seinerzeit Hauskonzerte genannt, und ihr Orchester wurde als Gewandhausorchester berühmt. Der Konzertsaal hatte eine exzellente Akustik. Johann Adam Hiller war der erste Gewandhaus-Musikdirektor. Später wirkte unter anderem Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in diesem Amt. 1894 wurde der Bau abgebrochen und an seiner Stelle das Städtische Kaufhaus errichtet.

English:
The Gewandhaus, the trade hall of the cloth merchants, once stood here. The concerts held here beginning in 1781 were known at the time as house concerts, and their orchestra became famous as the Gewandhaus Orchestra. The concert hall had excellent acoustics. Johann Adam Hiller was the first Music Director of the Gewandhaus. Later, among others, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy served in this position. In 1894, the building was demolished and replaced by the Municipal Trade Hall (Städtisches Kaufhaus).
