Hier stand das Gewandhaus, das Messehaus der Tuchhändler. Das Gewandhausorchester, das hier ab 1781 Konzerte gab und unter Mendelssohn Weltruhm erlangte, ist das älteste bürgerliche Konzertorchester der Welt. Zu den Komponisten, die hier gastierten oder deren Werke uraufgeführt wurden, gehören Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner und Brahms.
The Gewandhaus or cloth merchants' hall stood on this site. The Gewandhaus orchestra, the world's oldest civic concert orchestra, gave concerts here beginning in 1781 and grew to prominence under Mendelssohn. Composers including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner and Brahms gave guest performances or saw their works premiered here.
