English Translation:
On the site of today's Galeria Kaufhof stood the Messehof, with its inn and rental houses, until its destruction in 1943. The building known as the "Great Fireball" was home to several notable figures. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived here from 1755 to 1757. The Prussian officer and poet Ewald Christian von Kleist resided here in 1757/58. Johann Wolfgang Goethe lived here from 1765 to 1768, and the engraver Johann Friedrich Bause made his home here from 1794 to 1812.
