The site of today's Karstadt department store encompasses numerous properties that have been developed for centuries. Clara Wieck, pianist and later wife of Robert Schumann, was born on September 13, 1819, in the corner house "Hohe Lilie" on Neumarkt. Friedrich Schiller stayed in September 1801 at the "Hôtel de Bavière", located on the corner of Petersstraße. The writer Jean Paul lived at the inn "Drei Rosen" on Petersstraße from 1781 to 1784 while a student in Leipzig.

Clara Josephine Schumann, neé Wieck, (1819-1896) was a German composer, pianist, and music teacher. Appraised as one of the most esteemed pianists of her time, Schumann gained a wide range of influence, which she maintained over a 61-year concert career. She used this influence to familiarize the world with her compositions, as well as make fundamental changes to the piano recital.
