Neues Rathaus
⎯⎯⎯
New Town Hall
On the site of this City Hall stood for the previous 350 years the Pleißenburg, the castle of the territorial ruler. It was built between 1549 and 1569 under Duke Maurice and Elector Augustus. Its architect was Hieronymus Lotter, who also built the Old Town Hall on the Market Square. Under King Albert, the city purchased the castle and demolished it in 1897.
On September 9, 1899, during the tenure of Mayor Dr. Otto Georgi, the cornerstone of this building was laid. The building was designed by City Architect Hugo Licht according to his own plans and completed in six years. Upon completion, the building was inaugurated on October 7, 1905, under Mayor Dr. Bruno Tröndlin in the presence of King Frederick Augustus.
