It was here at Whitemarsh between 1783 and 1789 at the General Chapter meetings of the clergy that the Catholic Church in America was organized. Georgetown University was planned, the decision to incorporate the land holdings of the Jesuit order was made and Fr. John Carroll was elected the first Catholic Bishop of the United States on May 18th, 1789. This monument is raised by Sacred Heart Parish in grateful acknowledgement of these most historic events.
