. Excerpt (in translation):
Statistics: Den Helder was subjected to 160 attacks, involving 117 instances of bomb-dropping. The Willemsoord Naval Dockyard (the shipbuilding and maintenance yard for the Royal Netherlands Navy) was hit 25 times.

There were 178 fatalities, 56 people seriously injured, and 133 slightly injured. Most of the air raids took place in 1940 (59) and 1941 (26). The number declined in 1942 (12), 1943 (7), 1944 (10), and 1945 (3).

The air raids and the demolition of the ‘Ouwe Helder’ district—ordered by the German occupying forces—triggered a massive exodus of refugees. They sought shelter in surrounding villages and towns in the northern tip of North Holland, and sometimes further afield, such as in Friesland.
