1. John J. Hewitt House Marker
Inscription. Designed in the Eastlake Victorian style, this house was built for John and Martha Hewitt. The Hewitts had moved to Riverside from Illinois after reading of its healthful climate. Mr. Hewitt was a pioneer in Riverside's early Citrus Horticulture, demonstrating that mature seedling trees can be transplanted and that Naval orange buds can be grafted onto old trees.

(3050 Orange Street) John and Martha Hewitt built this Eastlake Victorianera house on their ten-acre orange grove in 1885. After her husband’s death in 1909, Martha subdivided her property into forty-three residential lots and paid to have her house cut into two pieces and moved 90 degrees to face Orange Street. She lived there until 1920.
