St Botolph's Priory
| | Colchester Heritage Walk | |
The only building to survive is the nave of the priory church, built mostly of reused brick and stone from the Roman city. It was finished in 1177. The eastern half of the church has disappeared, but its plan was revealed by an archaeological excavation in the early 1990s.
The priory was closed on the orders of Henry VIII in 1536 and its land and buildings were given to Sir Thomas Audley, the king's Lord Chancellor. The church remained in use until the Siege of Colchester in 1648, when it lay between the encircling Parliamentarian forces and the Royalist defenders manning the town walls. It was badly damaged by artillery fire and has remained in ruins ever since.
St Botolph's Priory is in the care of English Heritage and managed by Colchester Borough Council.
