1. "Daniel Nason" Marker

Inscription. This 4-4-0 "American" type locomotive was designed by Master Mechanic George S. Griggs and built by the railroad's shops. It is the only surviving "Dutch Wagon," locomotive, with its cylinders under the smokebox and inside the frames, a popular design before the Civil War. It has 16" x 20" cylinders and 54" drivers. Although a coal-burning engine it was "backdated" to look like an older wood-burning one with a bonnet stack, small tender, and even an older builder's plate to to to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It was loaned to Purdue University from 1905 to 1938, was at the New York World's Fair in 1939 - 1940, then sold to the Danbury Fair in Connecticut in 1951. It was bought and donated by the "Friends of the Danbury Collection" in 1982 when the fair closed down and rejoined the rest of the Purdue collection.
