1. The Medal of Honor Marker
The United States Medal of Honor, also known as the Congressional Medal of Honor, is the highest, most prestigious award presented to a member of the U. S. armed forces. To be awarded the Medal of Honor, the recipient must have performed an act of valor in a action against the enemy at the risk of one's own life above and beyond the call of duty. While Congress determines whether the person's action(s) merit this distinction, the Medal of Honor is formally awarded by the President of the United States.
There are 3 different types of Medals of Honor: The Army Medal of Honor; the Navy Medal of Honor, which is awarded to Navy, Marines and Coast Guard; and the Air Force Medal of Honor The Senate created the original Medal of Honor for the U.S. Navy in December, 1861. The following year, in 1862, the Senate created a Medal of Honor for the Army. Finally, the Air Force received its own version in 1965.
