Inscription.
Steam Locomotive No. 3423 is a Baldwin-built coal burning passenger steam locomotive for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF). She was built in 1921 for a cost of $62,000.

This locomotive is a 4-6-2 "Pacific" type. The configuration of the wheels, with the six very large drive wheels in the middle, allowed for speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Originally built as a coal burner, the ATSF rebuilt almost the entire 3400 series of locomotives beginning in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. All coal burning locomotives, including the 3423, were converted to oil burning during these refits.

The 3423 logged almost 2 million miles during her lifetime. Starting in the Illinois Division, the locomotive came to Texas in 1944. She spent the rest of her operational life in service on the Santa Fe's Gulf lines between Kansas City and Galveston, and Temple to Sweetwater.

She was retired from service in early 1955 and donated to the City of Temple. She has been on permanent display since. Restoration and safety efforts have since removed her asbestos jacket, which insulated the boiler.
