Inscription.
Charles Cobbold Farr, chief trader at the Hudson Bay Company's Fort Temiskaming, in 1883 purchased 30 acres of land known as Humphrey's Depot. Natives had originally named the site Matabanick — place where the trail comes out — in reference to the end of a portage from the upper Montreal River to Lake Temiskaming.
Farr left the Hudson Bay Company in 1889 and settled on this property which he called Haileybury. With the arrival of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway, and the subsequent discovery of silver at Cobalt in 1903, Haileybury's population soared.
By 1910 Haileybury was a bustling community with electric streetcar service, several large hotels, majestic homes along Lakeshore Road known as Millionaire's Row and a National Hockey Association team — the Haileybury Comets. In 1912 Haileybury became the Judicial Seat for the newly created District of Temiskaming.
The Haileybury Court House and Land Registry Office were built soon after. On October 4, 1922 the Great Fire burned 650 square miles destroying property and communities in 18 townships within the district. Within 3 to 6 hours, 90% of the Town of Haileybury was destroyed leaving 3500 people homeless and $2,000,000 in property damages.

Excerpt: Temiskaming Shores is a city in the Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It was created by the amalgamation of the town of New Liskeard, the town of Haileybury, and the township of Dymond in 2004. Haileybury was founded in 1889 by Charles Cobbold Farr, who named the newly founded town after the Haileybury and Imperial Service College, his former school in England. Haileybury was formally incorporated as a town in 1904. Farr encouraged settlement in the area, penning his own promotional pamphlet, entitled “The Lake Temiskamingue District,” to attract new settlers to the region. Marketed to settlers as prime agricultural land, Haileybury had only a handful of residents until the arrival of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway in the early 1900s, and the subsequent discovery of large silver deposits in neighboring Cobalt in 1903. During the Cobalt Silver Rush, Haileybury became a 'bedroom community” that served the needs of the many miners and, most famously, many mine owners and managers. These mine managers and owners were responsible for the construction of the row of stately homes, nicknamed “Millionaire's Row” that stretched along the waterfront on what is now Lakeshore Road, many of which still stand today. By 1912, Haileybury had been named the judicial seat for the Temiskaming Region, a title it retains to this day.(Submitted on July 5, 2026, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
