1. Portlaoise Vocational School Marker
Inscription. Maryborough Technical School first opened to pupils in 1907 on the initiative of the Queen’s County Committee for Agriculture and Technical Instruction. It was one of the first technical schools in Ireland. The early classes included book-keeping, handwriting, arithmetic, domestic science, woodwork and applied science. In 1930 the first Laois Vocational Education Committee was inaugurated and vocational education in Portlaoise and throughout the county expanded in subsequent years. The school was renamed as Portlaoise Vocational School. It was replaced by a new College at Mountrath Road in September 2006.
