You are standing at the approximate center of the Village of Catskill, seat of Greene County, diagonally across Main Street from the Neoclassical Revival Greene County Court House (built 1908). Archaeological findings nearby suggest that this area was inhabited at least 12,500 years ago by semi-nomadic hunters. Settled by Europeans by the mid 17th century, the Great Imboght was formed as a District of Albany County in 1772 and became the Town of Catskill in 1788, The village was surveyed in 1773 and incorporated in 1806, Today's Historic Catskill Point on the Hudson River was an island until a landfill connected it to Main Street in a the 19th century. Access to the county's interior was greatly improved by the opening of the Susquehanna Turnpike in 1802, which ran from Catskill Landing on the River, along Main Street and west over the mountains into Otsego County.

Main Street probably began as a footpath for the indigenous people and was first chartered by the owners of the Lindsay Patent in 1741 along its present route, Settlement of the village originally developed along the banks of the Catskill Creek The buildings

in the village and along Main Streer are an unusual and. important surviving record of many architectural styles from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

In addition to having become an important agricultural and commercial center, the Village of Catskill was a major port on the Hudson River serving the booming tourist industry in the Catskill Mountains to the west. Among many notable personalities staying in or passing through the village were the Marquis de Lafayette, James Fenimore Cooper, William Cullen Bryant, Martin Van Buren,Ulysses S. Grant, Chester A. Arthur, Oscar Wilde, England's Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Washington Irving (who wrote the tale of Rip Van Winkle), and most of the painters who belong to the Hudson River School of Art, the founder Thomas Cole, having been a resident of the Village from 1856 to 1848.

Enjoy a stroll along this historic street lined with exceptional architecture galleries, restaurants and shops.
