Taking Advantage of Local Resources
The connection between furniture and Galax was established early in the city's history. One of Glax's founders, John B. Waugh, took advantage of the local timber resources in the surrounding forests and the untapped labor supply, and opened the Galax Company in 1903.
A Firm Seat
More furniture manufacturing companies soon sprouted in Galax. Bunyan C. Vaughan and J.D. Bassett established the Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company in 1919 to manufacture bedroom furniture. Taylor Vaughan, who was Bunyan Vaughan's brother, and other investors started the Vaughan Furniture Company in 1923 to manufacture medium-priced bedroom and dining room furniture. In 1924,, the Webb Furniture Company was established by a brother-in-law to the Vaughan's, J.V. Webb. The success of these early industries gave rise to a number of businesses peripherally related to furniture manufacturing, including a transport company, lumber companies, an upholstery fabric manufacturer, and minor manufacturers. Through the years, furniture and furniture-related industries became a strong seat upon which the city's economy and well-being rested.
