1. History of the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum.
Excerpt: The New Liskeard and District Museum was founded in 1974 and started developing a collection of artifacts in the Harris Township Orange Hall building. On July 15, 1991, the official name was changed to the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum.(Submitted on July 9, 2026, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)In 1999 construction began on a new building at its present location. The new Museum building is a replica of the historic Shepherdson Basket and Pump Works that operated in New Liskeard from the 1930s to the 1950s. Our new facility officially opened on August 5, 2000. Our exhibits attempt to show the life of the early pioneers of the Little Claybelt region from the 1880s to the 1950s.
Since 2006, the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum has collected over three hundred and twenty stories and memories of our pioneer families which we have published into volumes entitled Claybelt Chronicles, with the older histories in Claybelt Memories. We also maintain a library of local family histories at the Museum and
add new information as it becomes available. This information is accessible for research. We have many of these books for sale in our gift shop.
2. Miss Claybelt.
Excerpt: It is impossible to go through New Liskeard without noticing the giant fiberglass dairy cow — crafted by Mr. Jerry Sherperson — that highlights the area’s agriculture to visiting tourists. The statue is a replica of a much smaller model provided to Mr. Sheperdson by the Dairy Association of Canada. Ms. Claybelt is intended to resemble a Holstein-Friesian cow (the most popular of the dairy breeds) and is approximately 12 feet in height! Ms. Claybelt is a symbol of the large agricultural industry of the area.(Submitted on July 9, 2026, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
