1. Scheidler Sawmill - Manufactured ca. 1896 Marker

Inscription.
This sawmill was manufactured by Scheidler Machine Works, which was located in the brick building across the street that now houses The Works museum.

Scheidler Machine Works was in operation from 1881-1926, manufacturing as many as 75 steam engines, 80 sawmills, and 50 grain separators annually.

Reinhard Scheidler, proprietor of Scheidler Machine Works, was born in Germany in 1834 and immigrated to America in 1851. After working as a machinist in Maryland, he settled in Newark, Ohio in 1855. In 1861, Reinhard partnered with John McNamar, who operated the Newark Machine Co., and together they created their own firm. However, in 1881, the firm dissolved and each man started his own factory.

On April 29, 1903, a steam engine exploded during testing, killing Mr. Scheidler and injuring several of his employees.
