1. Polaris A-3 Missile Marker

Inscription. Polaris, named for the North Star, is a two stage ballistic missile powered by solid fueled rocket motors and guided by a self contained inertial guidance system. The 1200 nautical mile range missile is designated Polaris A-1. The Polaris A-2, the second generation missile has a 1500 nautical mile range.

The first launching of the third generation Polaris A-3 from a submerged submarine occurred on October 26, 1963 when the USS Andrew Jackson SSBN 619 successfully fired an A-3 down the Atlantic Missile Range. The 2500 nautical mile Polaris A-3 became operational on 28 September 1964.
