Pocatello in Bannock County, Idaho — The American West (Mountains)
Veterans Memorial
This memorial, dedicated Veterans Day, 2011, honors United States military veterans, who, as Idaho State University students, faculty, administrators and staff members have contributed to the growth and success of this great institution. Throughout the university's history, our veterans have honorably served during both peacetime and conflict.
The memorial features four plaques and nameplates from a World War I memorial dedicated by the American Legion in 1938 near Frazier Hall and later razed due to structural damage. The nameplates recognize the four ISU students who sacrificed their lives during that war. The sundial, a replica of the symbolic centerpiece which topped the WWI memorial, was recreated from photographs. The granite plaque originally adorned a second veterans' memorial dedicated by the ISU ROTC Program in 1968 near the Administration Building.
Let this memorial be dedicated to those who have given a part of their lives in the military service of this country. Let this stand as a constant reminder that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

They shall not grow old
As we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
Or in the morning,
We shall remember them.

(By Yann Ranaivo, Apr 18, 2010) Excerpt: Had it not been for the influx of veterans who decided to attend college after both World War I and II, then Idaho State University would have probably never turned into one of the Gem States major schools.(Submitted on July 13, 2026, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)The first time the military saved us was during World War I. When that broke out, all the male students, staff and faculty left, said Scott Turner, who heads student recruitment at ISU. Essentially, only the women were left, and I think there were only a couple hundred people left. (But) right after the Armistice, soldiers came back and ISU gained momentum.
Since the beginning of this school year, ISU officials have discussed the possibility of building a memorial that would commemorate the universitys veterans. Cadet Field, which is located just east of the Rendezvous Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, is being turned into open space, and ISU intends to build the memorial in that area.
