Cortez in Manatee County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
A Century of Community/Un siglo de comunidad
This 1912 Cortez Rural Graded Schoolhouse originally housed three classrooms for grades 1-8. A 1933 Public Works Project addition turned the middle classroom into an auditorium, identifiable by its pitched roof in contrast to the flat roof on the original portion.
Used as a school until 1961, the building "served as community center for meetings, weekly movies with a five cent admission, Political Rallies with the open porch as the podium, and Holiday Festivals." Grassroots efforts to preserve the schoolhouse led to Cortez's addition to the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the purchase of the property by Manatee County in 1999, with matching funds from Florida Community Trust.
In 2007, the Florida Maritime Museum opened here to preserve and share Florida's fishing and maritime heritage. This historic structure has always been a place for the community to gather and learn, and the Museum strives to continue this legacy.
