Oxford Township in Oakland County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Helen Smith Park
Helen Smith was Oxford. She was our community's biggest booster and best friend. After graduating from Oxford High School in 1952, Helen helped run her family's business, Smith Silo Co., for 20 years. The many silos they built left a lasting footprint on the Midwest.
Helen made it her mission to see to it that Oxford's young people always received the financial and moral support they needed and deserved. She became a charter member of the Oxford Wildcat Booster Club in 1972. For over 30 years, Helen supported student-athletes by coordinating fundraisers, awards ceremonies and scholarship programs.
Helen served on the Oxford Board of Education from 1974-76 and coached OHS cheerleaders. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 108, served on American Legion Post 108's scholarship committee and served as the local chairperson for the Boys State and Girls State programs.
She couldn't do enough for Oxford's youth. She treated them all as if they were her own children and whenever she talked about them, she beamed with a mother's pride.
Helen coined the phrase, "Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat." To her, they weren't just words, they were a contract between her and the community she nurtured, protected and loved. This plaque was donated by Barron Industries.
