Genadekapel

Chapel of Grace
The Alkmaar businessman Gerrit van den Bosch (1857–1931) was the driving force behind the flourishing of the Shrine in the first half of the 20th century. Driven by his deep faith, he worked with an Episcopal Committee to redevelop the Marian site. The first step, taken in 1905, was the discovery and reconstruction of the original well, located near the railway line that had since been constructed. In 1909, a temporary Chapel of Grace was built to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims. The current, permanent Chapel of Grace was completed in 1930; it was designed by Jan Stuyt (1868–1934).

The wall paintings are the work of the Haarlem artist Han Bijvoet (1897–1975). The rear wall features a colorful depiction of the Heavenly Banquet—representing the ultimate goal of every human life: to be with God the Father in heaven. At the bottom,

four scenes from the Litany of Mary are depicted. The scenes on the side walls show the Annunciation, the Birth of the Lord, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the Finding of Jesus in the Temple, the Crucifixion, and the Coronation of Mary in Heaven. Mieke Schobbe (born 1952) created the blue artwork on the rear wall and behind the Sodality altar; this piece addresses the figure of Mary and the needs of the present day.
