1. Terrell Volunteer Fire Department Marker
This mural was painted on the side of the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department at the southwest corner of South Frances and the Railroad tracks. The mural celebrates Terrell Volunteer Fire Department's long-time relationship with the City of Terrell as the city's only fire department for many years. Shown in the fire truck on the right is former Volunteer Fire Chief John R. Briggs and in the fire truck on the left, former long-time volunteer fireman Dowell Harper.
Near the bottom center of mural, the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department shows that it was established in 1879. Horses can also be seen, standing behind the red automobiles. Horses were used to fight fires early on, before the advent of the automobile. Like most small town volunteer operations, the department has long since been replaced with a modern operation. But Terrell remembers the dedication of the people, and the animals, who protected our citizens for so many years.
