Rifle arm, timely hitting and handling of pitchers made Navy veteran mainstay catcher of Cubs and Pittsburgh from 1940-1956.

35-year Tidewater resident coached with Washington, Minnesota and N.Y. Mets. In first 9 years managing had 4 pennants, 8 first division finishes and named All Star manager 5 times.

Led Tides to 1969 I.L. Pennant and named Minor League Manager of the Year by Sporting News.

Outstanding teacher, has started countless players on road to major league stardom.

Shrine recognizes players and executives who have significantly contributed to the game of baseball in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The Norfolk Tides annually induct new members into the shrine.
